Welcome to the world MMA12 Litter!
I would like to welcome to this world our newest little babies...
Things could not get anymore perfect with this litter...
Born Jan 1st 2016! New Years Day!
12 babies born - one for every month of the new year!
6 girls & 6 boys!
I honestly usually do not name my litters, except for the ones I am keeping. It is just too many names to go through & I don't like reusing names. But after just about everyone suggesting it.... I will be naming each of the babies after a month. It is really just too perfect not to.
Mom & babies are doing great. I knew Meg would be an excellent mother. All the babies have huge milk bands, they look like they may pop!
These babies will be available for adoption on Feb 12th for those interested. Please contact me for more info & you can reserve your babies now.

Baby Rat Playtime
I wanted to show alittle bit about how I let my babies get playtime in.
I feel it is very important to little developing rats to let them have exposure to alot of different things. Sounds, sights, smells, and touch. This is a key time in their life to not only learn and absorb all they can but to also teach them to be confident and unafraid of new things.
I do handle my babies every single day from birth, but at about 2 weeks old when their eyes have opened is where the fun really begins.
I take them into my living room where I have a small animal playpen set up. It is fairly good height for babies and the bars are thinly spaced so they can not squeeze through. I put it in the living room instead of the rat room so they can be exposed to new sights, smells, noises, animals and foot traffic.
**Note: Yes I do expose all of my babies to the cats and dog safely. I do not recommend this for those who are not 100% experienced and know their pets very well. It is always completely supervised and at a safe distance. I like the babies getting experience with the animal smells and having them being watched. I have done this with all of my litters, I know my pets very very well. I would never let them touch or be too close as accidents can occur.
Ok so I fill the playpen with a different variety of items each day. This lets them try out new things, textures, stuff to climb over, on, and inside. It challenges their brains.
Some things I have used: cat toy balls with bells, ribbons that they will tug and drag around, paper towel rolls, boxes, bowls, and parts of cages to climb on. When they are alittle bit older they will also get to experience very shallow bowls of water, pea fishing, and some new treats!
So here are some videos and pics!
Their very first time in the playpen at 17 days old:
Playing with a kitty ball at 17 days old:
Now 19 Days old you can see they are much more active.
And have even learned to escape the playpen. Not even three weeks old yet!! What handfuls.

BCA9 Litter
Introducing my lovely BCA9 Litter.
Sadly this was an accidental litter. My sweet little girl Charlie decided to out smart me and managed (what I thought was) the unfathomable feat of getting to the boys cage. Even the best of us can make mistakes and be out smarted by a rat! She is just like her mother, my heart rat Khaleesi and always looking for ways to test her boundaries. Well the lesson was learned the hard way and it will never happen again!
While Charlie's litter was a surprise, I am trying to make the best of it.
They will all be available for adoption after October 20th.
9 babies, 6 boys & 3 girls.

BKB4-Litter Day 13
Both boys opened their eyes yesterday & one of the girls (BKB4-4F aka Meg) opened her eyes today. Meg was the little runt too!
Now that their eyes are/starting to open they are much more active. They crawl around & when I go near the cage & start talking they crawl over to see me!
I have pretty much decided to keep all 4 babies. Sticking to my Supernatural theme- the boys being Sam & Dean, one girl being Meg & I think the last girl being Charlie but not 100%.
My boys. I love Deans Tail, the tip is pink!

BKB4-Litter Day 12
I sadly had my camera out of commission & missed days 10 & 11 :( & Day 9 I used my husband's phone and am not very good at it so no really good pics.
Day 12:
Both boys have opened their eyes! I have decided 100% that I am keeping both boys. I am in love, they stole my heart!
BKB4-1M will be named Sam & BKB4-2M will be named Dean. It is a Supernatural thing ❤
And some videos!
One is of Sam giving himself a bath, then one of Sam trying to nurse off the blanket. He must have been starving poor chubby baby.

BKB4-Litter Day 8
The babies refused to cooperate during picture time...they kept crawling all over the place!
I will admit I think I am smitten with these ones. Perhaps the small litter size affected that. I planned on keeping like 2...but we will see!
This is what I dealt with them crawling:

Baby rat development- week 1
The first week of a baby rats life is full of small changes and not much in the way of excitement after the birth itself!
When babies are first born they are called pinkies. They are born pink, naked and with eyes and ears closed. Healthy babies will be very wiggly and may make loud squeaking sounds.
Around day 3 they will show the first signs of their pigment and you will begin to get your first idea of their markings.
Each day they may darken and grow larger and chubbier. By day 6-7 they are wiggly little things and may crawl off a bit when removed from the nest!
By day 7 their eyes & ears are still closed but they have started to show the first bit of peach fuzz.
For more on baby development check out my page here

BKB4-Litter Day 5-7
*Picture Heavy
The babies are doing amazingly well. One of the males (bkb4-1M) is alittle chunker. He is so chubby. I just love their big fat bellies. It is probably alot nicer with such a small litter for all of them to get plenty of nums.
Their momma, Khaleesi is an amazing mom. But she is already getting bored lol. She is my most active, intelligent, on the go rat, and sitting still taking care of babies is just too much for her. Poor girl. So I keep getting the pouty face & letting her out to play. Putting a wheel in her cage tomorrow and so far has been threading paper towels through the bars for her to pull inside the cage and tear apart as nesting material. It gives her some stimulation. She is being absolutely sweet and letting me steal her babies away for pictures with no care.
You can tell the big chunk here. This is my largest boy (on the left) compared to my smallest girl
I am going to guess that we have a black capped (bkb4-1M), a blue berkshire (bkb4-2M), a blue bareback (bkb4-3F), and maybe a pew or himi(bkb4-4F)? We will see when they get some furry butts on them lol

How to tell if a baby rat is dumbo eared
Dumbo Rats are the same breed as fancy rats, they are just a different variety with a different type of ear. There are alot of rumors out there about dumbos being larger, gentler, sweeter, etc... but in truth these are nothing more then anecdotal rumors. I imagine it is because the dumbo ears do give rats a sweeter look to their face.
I admit dumbos are my absolute favorite. Their little faces make me melt.
To be a dumbo, rats need to have their ears set low on the sides of their head. The ears are often large and rounded.
Dumbo is a recessive trait. So it can be carried without showing up. In order to breed dumbos you need both parents to carry it.
If both parents are dumbos, u will get a litter of all dumbos.
If you have a dumbo parent & a standard eared parent but the standard eared parent carries dumbo, then you can have like a quarter of your babies be dumbo.
If the standard eared parent does not carry dumbo then all of the babies will be standard eared.
http://www.afrma.org/ratvar.htm#dumbo
In baby rats you can tell if it will be dumbo by checking the angle & location of the ear. If the top of the ear lines up with the middle of the eye, then it is dumbo!

So grown & going to their new homes
They are just a smidge over 5 weeks now and handfuls! I had two escape
when I was trying to take them out for playtime and couldnt find one for
a minute and paniced lol.
The boys went to their new home the other day and she seemed really nice so I am happy. Two girls are leaving sometime next week.
The most rats I've ever had was 3 so having 6 right now feels crazy. IDK how people with so many rats do it lol. I had all 5 babies and momma sitting on my shoulder. The babies sleeping! I let them out for playtime and all they wanna do is climb me and hang out on my shoulders.
I was looking through their old pics and wow they have gotten so big so fast!
Well all the babies that were leaving have now gone to their new homes. I am left with three girls. I had different names picked out but decided to go with Prue, Piper & Phoebe from Charmed. Three sisters was too perfect lol
It is so much easier only having the 4 of them lol.

My babies
Well the boys are definitely easy to tell from afar now lol wow! I have
only ever had girls so it is a bit different for me. They are so big and
in your face lmao!
Mom's doing a good job weaning them off. I caught her nursing a few in the wheel the other day oO
They are little piggies. I have been hand feeding them cheerios. They
are still obsessed with my finger nails too. How many rats can fit on my
shoulders at once? Apparently 7 of them quite happily lol

They grow up so fast!
Super easy to tell the males from females now. The boys are obvious lol
They are doing really well. They are so active and adorable. Going from one rat to 10 I sure go through alot of food even though they are babies lol.
Video of the boys. I separated them to get pics for their to be owners. And took them to the bathtub to play. They were not very impressed.

A little mischief
They are so fun now that their eyes are open. Having 9 little rats crawl
all over you at once is a crazy feeling lol. I love it! They love
giving me a bath too, which is just about the most adorable thing ever,
they are so precise with their bathing they don't miss a spot. They are so light one crawled up my shoulder and into my hair and getting her out was not easy lol
Poor momma seems alot more worn out lately. They are quite active at night I think its making her crazy lol. They don't listen.
They have shown interest in food but I haven't seen them eating yet. I saw one copying mommy andtrying to build up the nest awww.
I put them in this bucket and put my hands in and they all fight to try and climb my hands
Its super hard for me to tell the genders apart now. They won't hold still and it makes me unsure. When they were little it was much easier. When they were alittle younger it was easy to see their nipples but now they are so fluffy its not so easy. Im sure the boys will be easier to see the difference with soon lol

They are super active now. Trying out food and even using the water bottle! They go all over the cage and even climb the side. It is surprising how one day they are just little sleepy pinkies then poof they are little rats! They wrestle and annoy each other. And are just adorable.
